Queen of Gas

Earlier this year, Numad Technologies LLC seized the opportunity to position itself for U.S. government contracts. With our deep familiarity with public tendering, we were surprised to find quotas designated for minority groups. What stood out, however, was that these tenders specifically and compulsorily favoured women-owned businesses and veterans. This shift, especially in the United States, was designed to level the playing field and create opportunities for women in competitive industries.

Now, it seems that the Nigerian upstream oil and gas sector is cautiously considering similar initiatives for women-owned businesses. As a female Managing Director of Numad Energy Integrated Services Limited, where I hold a 95% share, I can attest that women in this industry don't seek handouts. Instead, we want the opportunity to compete on a level playing field—especially in the "big deal" projects that are typically dominated by men.

Women are exceptional multitaskers, capable of wearing many hats in business. If I may speak for myself and the women I know, we're more than ready to take on significant roles.

The oil and gas upstream sector's shift to include women in substantial projects is indeed a welcome change, but we need more than token gestures.

Here's the real question: Are oil and gas operators genuinely committed to seeing women-owned businesses thrive, or is this all just a brand gimmick to appease us? Is this an attempt to make headlines without offering real opportunities?

The conversation has begun, and while we appreciate the promises, we eagerly await tangible results. It's time for the "boys club" to become a HeforShe while recognizing that women are not only capable of competing but will deliver with groundbreaking results. We may not join them for late-night drinks, but we can certainly grow and multiply the economy with our work.

The future of women owned business in oil and gas hangs in the balance—and it's up to the industry to decide whether it's serious or just playing games. Till then, we shall stay prepared and compliant as business owners for when the opportunities come knocking.
